Neighborhood

Bowie State University is centrally located on a scenic wooded tract next to the city of Bowie. The Telecommuting Center is located on the lower level of the Thurgood Marshall Library.

This location is about five miles east of Greenbelt and Lanham, less than 15 miles west of Annapolis, and seven miles north of the Capital Beltway (I-95) at the New Carrollton exit at Route 450. The Baltimore-Washington Parkway is less than five miles west of the University if using either the Greenbelt Route 193 exit or the Laurel Route 197 exit. Route 197 brings motorists within 200 yards of the campus.

In winter 1989, a MARC commuter rail station opened at the University, serving the Baltimore-Washington Corridor and adding a second public transportation option to existing Metrobus service.

Telecommuters will enjoy Bowie Town Center which offers a wide variety of goods and services in a unique and exciting "Main Street" environment. Anchored by Macy's, Sears, Barnes & Noble, Bed Bath & Beyond, Famous Footwear and Old Navy, the Center features several specialty shops, restaurants and a Food Pavilion. In addition, Bowie Town Center includes a Safeway grocery providing busy professionals with one-stop shopping. At the end of the day, Arts are a piece of the fabric of life in Bowie. The City of Bowie maintains four art galleries, is home to the Bowie Playhouse, our own little “Theater in the Woods” and supports the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts. The City also sponsors summer concerts at Allen Pond Park and on the Town Green in Old Town Bowie. Some local area attractions include City of Bowie Ice Arena, City of Bowie Farmer's Market, and Bowie Baysox Baseball Stadium. The Baysox have been the Class AA Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles since their inaugural season in 1993.
